Since 1941, homeowners were only able to grow food in their back yard. For 3 years, a dedicated grassroots group in Sacramento worked very hard to permit front yard gardens . In 2007, city council approved 8-1 that Sacramento would now be able to grow more than just low growing ground cover. 30% of it can now be veggies and fruit! Now, strolling thru midtown you can catch mini plots from the size of a shoe box, to this beautiful sleeping creature.
Not much but sleepers here, but I am anxious to watch this garden birth itself next Spring.
Between a one way street , and a busy sidewalk is home to Summer Squash. Now a cover crop of leaves and next seasons wishes.

I always have the urge to lounge on a mound of soil bags. Going to nurseries I get that 'playground urge' . I can see me now. Laying on my back, reading a book in the sun, while inhaling the richness of earth in bags beneath me.

Nestled next to some Peppers, you can find some pretty flowers to make your winter days that much sunnier.

I will revisit very soon to see how everyone is coming along. Hopefully this time , I can meet the gardener and cry of joy in her/his arms .

Sp purdy! there's a little front plot of swiss chard and friends across the street from my house and I love to walk past it. Your pics are so tantalizing- I want more!

yeahhhhh pretty gardens! blueberries, wow, they're beautiful. so all along i thought this was YOUR garden, you mean you are sneaking around a neighbor's garden? that is adorable, and the sign of a true enthusiast! hope they'll share the bounty!
First off: This blog rocks. So do city gardens. Even though I live in the country my allotted space is so small that it takes that same special trickery to make it work. I heartily recommend making everything you can climb. It works particularly good with squash and cukes. Up, up!

Yo ladies of the land! Thanks for the comments. I failed to say this isnt my garden. whoops. I am just an admirer. But I do hope the intention of this very accessible garden is going to feed hungry people passing by.
Has anyone read 'Farm City'? Great book! Oakland urban garden feeding crack hos, a man that lives in a car, and many other colorful characters :)
